We sat down with Brett Glover to talk about his store, Glover’s Secondhand and what it’s like to own a small business in Columbia. His “collective market of artisans, curators, and visionaries” is anchored in the Columbia Arts Building in the heart of the newly formed Columbia Arts District.

We’re excited to have Glover’s Secondhand on Support Local. You will be able to scan receipts and Glover’s will donate 5% to a charity you choose.

What’s the story of Glovers? When did you start, why did you get into the business?

I was in retail for 10 years before I moved here, then worked at a couple local thrift shops - that's when I fell in love with vintage / secondhand stuff!  I started collecting and decided to open a booth at Bleu 32. Soon after that, we opened a store in the Columbia Arts Building just south of the Square.

Tell us a little bit about your store to those who may not know.

This place is more of a ministry, than anything.  Yea we have cool clothes, accessories and other unique stuff... but it's really about connection - connection with people, fond memories, and God.  We genuinely want each person that walks in (whether they buy something, or not) to be blessed.

What’s one reason you chose to be in Columbia?

The energy in Columbia is unmatched!  It's close enough to Nashville, but also far from the madness.  We love how small business owners support each other, no matter our differences.  Actually - our differences are what makes this town so special.  It' so eclectic!

What’s your favorite thing about owning a retail store in Columbia?

I already said it, but just how supportive each business owner is.  We're all in this together!  There's no reason for any business to be against another.  It's like ice-cream - you can never have too many flavors!

What’s something that’s really challenging?

For any entrepreneur, I believe the greatest challenge is US.  We need to get out of the way and let the business evolve into what it's meant to be.  We have to be open to new ideas that are different from how we saw things playing out.  Apple was around a long time before the iPhone came out.

What do you love about your customers?

I love that our customers are looking for something special, something one of a kind, something different.  They don't care what others think!  The items mean something to them, and that's what matters!

Where do you see things headed in the future?

Wow!  I'm so excited about our future!  We will definitely grow!  That means: outreach projects with our market family; more regular gatherings / events in the shop; more local artisans & collectors joining us; and LOTS of other things!

Where do you see Columbia in the next 5 years or more?

I see Columbia as a "quieter" Franklin haha!

Why is it so important to support local, to Love where you Live?

Are you friends with the CEO of Wal-Mart?  Target?  Nope?  Enough said.

Thanks for sitting down to talk with us Brett! We wish you all the best in the coming year!

You can visit Glover’s Secondhand Wednesday-Saturday at 307 W 11th St, Columbia, TN.
